Oh Scrap! : RSC Top from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Before I start constructing quilt tops for the next Compassion Quilt block drive, I wanted to try and sew some of my own blocks together.  I have quite a few piles of them around my sewing room.

About June of last year, I started making some Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks.  I have a bunch of 2.5" scrappy squares that I wanted to use.  I made a 12" heart block and a 12" color block.  I made one or two of each every month.  When I started making them, I wasn't sure exactly how I was going to use ...

Oh Scrap! : Yellow from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Even with all the other quilts I am working on, I still try and keep up with my Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks.  It is a good way for me to keep a small focus on my scraps.  We don't want them building up any more than they already are!

August is the color yellow.   So I made one heart block and one ombre color block.  I don't have a lot of yellow scraps so it was a bit of a challenge to find all these different shades of the color.

I also made 16 switchplate blocks.  Yellow is ...

Oh Scrap! : Orange from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I know, orange was the RSC color for May but I really did finish all of these before the end of the month.  I just didn't get a chance to write about them.

I finished my orange heart block and the color block for May.

I also sewed up 17 more switchplate blocks.  It takes a long time to cut these out because I am trying not to make any duplicates.

I really need to get this one up on a design wall so I can see how many more I need.

The good news is I have plenty ...

Oh Scrap! : A Productive Week from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I can't believe all the scrappy sewing I did this week.

I cut and sewed two purple heart blocks and one color block for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.

I also made 11 more string blocks from the scraps leftover from the Churn Dash quilts.  I took a bunch of photos of finished quilts this weekend so I hope to get some posts written sharing them.

I also sewed up a few more Churn dash quilt tops that I plan on quilting up this week.  If you have made blocks and haven't put them in the mail, you ...

Oh Scrap! : Green from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I really put the pedal to the metal this week and almost got caught up on all my RSC blocks.

I cut and sewed two green hearts.  This brings my total blocks up to five.

While I was sorting and gutting green scraps, I also cut enough squares to make two of these blocks.
I think I have a total of five of these blocks completed too.

I didn't forget about my switch plate blocks - I found eight more green prints I haven't used yet and sewed them up.  I think I have a few more cut and ...

Oh Scrap! : Pink RSC from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

LOTS of sewing occurred this week.  I pieced together a number of the Covered In Love quilt tops and even a few Compassion Quilts.  I will be sharing those as soon as they are quilted.

But I also dug through my pink scraps and made a few Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks.

A fun pink heart made from 2.5" squares.

While I was cutting 2.5" squares from my scraps, I also made this happy block.

Keeping my eye out for fun striped fabrics, I came across these two scraps and made them into 16 patch blocks.  I think I ...

Oh Scrap! : January RSC from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

It felt so nice to find some time this week to cut up some scraps.

I worked on my first Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks for 2023.

The color for January is blue.

I am only making two different blocks this year.  The first are these 36 patch blocks made from 2.5" squares.  I am really trying to keep things simple this year.

The second block are these hearts, also made from 2.5" squares.

My plan is to make 3-5 blocks of each color and then make two or three donation quilts with them.  I made the blocks the ...

Oh Scrap! : 2023 RSC Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

 Happy New Year Everyone!

My little Helper Arthur and I wanted to wish all of you the very best in 2023.

I always love New Years - by the time the end of December rolls around, I am done with the previous year and I look forward to a fresh start!

I see Angela has announced January's RSC color for 2023 but I already did my test blocks in red.  I am going to make heart blocks and 36 patch blocks.  Why 36?  So they are the same size - I might just combine the two blocks in one quilt.  I ...

Another RSC Finish from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Usually in my quilt making process, the sewing together of blocks is my bottleneck.  But lately, the biggest stack has been those projects waiting for their bindings!

Today I am ready to share another Rainbow Scrap Challenge finish.  This one was made using 2" strips of varying lengths.  I trimmed up each block to 12" square.

When I placed the blocks, I turned them 90 degrees from the last so that I didn't have to match many seams.  I really love the look.

When I pulled the scraps for each block, I also tried to group color hues to ...

Oh Scrap! : Finishing the Last Blocks from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I always find the last few blocks of a quilt top take the most amount of time to make.

Once I get about 80% of the blocks completed, I will put them all up on a design wall and identify what other blocks are needed to even out the color placement.  Then I start to pull scraps to make the necessary blocks.

I needed just three more blocks and there really needed to be a few more bright blocks.  So I made one in turquoise and one in lime.

And finally I made another gray one.  My gray bin no ...

Oh Scrap! : Still Making Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I didn't find myself with a whole lot of time to sew this week but I did get a few more blocks completed for one of my RSC projects.

I made two of these color blocks in brown.  My brown bin is overflowing so I decided to add a few to my quilt top.  I am using 2" strips and trimming them up to 12" square.

I also realized my gray bin is stuffed too so I made a single block.

I think that leaves me with needing to make three more blocks.  Hopefully I will get them finished ...

Oh Scrap! : Scrappy Design Walls from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I am continuing to surf along the wave of finishing momentum.

I only finished two scrappy blocks this week.  I have had these blocks cut and just waiting by my sewing machine for months.

I did move the completed blocks for this RSC quilt into my sewing room.  Now I can identify what additional colors I need.  I know I want a couple brown, at least one more yellow and another blue.  Then I will see what I think.

What I have been focusing on this week is finishing up this pinwheel quilt top.  It is hard to see but ...

Oh Scrap! : Still Making Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

This last week I continued to work on finishing blocks for a few of my scrappy projects.

Look what I found!  I knew I had made four of these Chaser blocks last week.  I found this missing one in a wrong stack of blocks.

I finished five more of my Well Suited blocks.  I think I now have just two more blocks to complete and I can start sewing the quilt top together.  I have to admit, I am getting pretty bored of this project so I am super happy to winding it up soon.

I also used some of ...

Oh Scrap! : Look at me Go from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

After being in a heat induced funk for a couple weeks, I have finally found my found my mojo and started sewing again.

I finished three of these scrappy blue and turquoise blocks for one of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge quilts.  These blocks are made using my Two Bits Scrap Mixology pattern module.  I think these blocks bring the total completed up to 23 - which is about half of what I need for the quilt.

I also finished up two more of these color blocks in turquoise.  I am making mine with 2" strips and trimming them to 12" square ...

Oh Scrap! : A Scrappy Flimsy from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I realized on Saturday morning that I had not spent any time in my sewing room the whole week.  Determined to change that, I left the vacuum in the middle of the living room and decided to spend a few hours sewing instead.

I spent that time sewing together the blocks in this quilt.  It is a scrap riot!

Here is a closer view.  You can see it is just a bunch of 2.5" squares.  Some blocks are framed with 1.5" solids and others are simply squares.

The quilt measures 70" x 90".  I am sure I have ...

Oh Scrap! : Still on Purple from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The new color for July is actually supposed to be blue or neutral.  But I am still working on the color purple.  I continue to fall behind this year!

I didn't have a lot of time to sew with this scraps this week but I did get these three pretty purple blocks completed.

I put them up on the design wall with the other completed blocks.  I have decided to go with a 5 x 6 block layout so I need to make 11 more.  I know I need some orange blocks and probably some brown.  I think I ...

Oh Scrap! : Keeping the Options Open from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Last Sunday I shared a few block photos of a new scrap project I had started.

I was making some 16 patches from 2.5" squares and framing them in some 1.5" solid strips.  The initial plan was to make the entire quilt from these framed blocks.

As I started sewing blocks and realizing just how many scraps in these colors I really had, I decided to modify my plans and make some of these 5 x 5 blocks to use up even more scraps.

Now I can alternate the framed blocks with these 25-patch blocks.  I was worried ...

Oh Scrap! : Seeing a Trend from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

Happy Fourth to all of those in the US.  It was nice that our weather cooled somewhat so many can get out and enjoy the holiday weekend.  I still decided to stay home close to the AC and sew.

I am finding myself excited about a new project I started.  I am always on the lookout for scrap quilt inspiration and recently I have been noticing I have a lot of turquoise, lime and black/gray fabric.

Like...A LOT.

So I started pulling them and cutting them into 2.5" squares.  I found quite a bit of my fabric ...

Oh Scrap! : A Bit of Progress from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

First, I apologize for not sharing any finishes this last Friday but Blogger decided to not allow any uploading of photos Thursday night when I went to write my post.  Then the weekend just got away from me...So I guess I will share my finish next week.

Today I want to share the progress I have made on my scrappy projects.
I was able to finish one more blue color block that I cut the pieces back in April.  I think this last block catches up all of my RSC projects just in time to switch to purple for ...

Oh Scrap! : A Little of Everything from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

The Spring weather has been absolutely lovely here in Oregon so I haven't been in my sewing room very much.  When I do go in there, I find myself not very focused on anything specific.

With all of my red RSC blocks completed for May, I went back and sewed a couple blocks in blue that I didn't get completed in April.  I think I want to make two more blocks in some different shades.

And I completed another log cabin block in blue to go with the green one I completed last month.  These take FOREVER to ...
